Benefits of ABA for Individuals with Autism
ABA therapy offers several benefits for individuals with autism, including:
- Improved Communication Skills: ABA helps develop both verbal and non-verbal communication skills, such as using words, gestures, or alternative communication methods to express needs and desires.
- Enhanced Daily Living Skills: ABA focuses on teaching essential daily living skills, such as toileting, dressing, hand washing, food acceptance, and crossing the road, fostering greater independence.
- Development of Social Skills: Through structured teaching methods, ABA helps individuals learn appropriate social interactions, such as making eye contact, sharing, taking turns, and understanding social cues.
- Increased Academic Readiness: ABA can enhance pre-academic skills, such as sitting attentively, following instructions, and participating in group activities, which are critical for a successful learning experience.
- Better Motor and Cognitive Skills: ABA programs are designed to improve both fine and gross motor skills, as well as cognitive skills like problem-solving, memory, and decision-making.
Mandey's Story
“The developmental pediatrician hardly spoke to me; he spent most of the appointment staring at his laptop. He said my son had autistic tendencies and gave me contact information for local agencies. I spent five months holding onto the hope that he did not actually have autism, yet lying awake at night crying because deep down I knew this was not a “tendency” and it was not going away. Finally, at my son’s three-year physical, the pediatrician instructed me to call the specialist back, and that’s when I learned he had indeed diagnosed him with autism. I felt so awful I hadn’t called sooner; I started setting up speech and behaviour therapies immediately.”
How We Help?
Like Mandey, many parents find receiving an autism diagnosis for their child to be an emotional and often traumatic event. At Aardvark we work together with the family and other significant individuals to develop an individualised program, tailored specifically to your child, your family and your needs. We find the teaching and learning style that suits your child best and work with your child and with you, to realise the realistic goals that have been jointly decided upon. In this way, we endeavour to take some of the weight and relieve some of the pressure off parents.
AUSTISM SUPPORT & SERVICES VICTORIA
Here we understand each child’s needs are unique which is why our program plans are individualised
We understand each child’s needs are unique which is why our program plans are individualised and delivered using the most appropriate techniques based on the principles of applied behaviour analysis (ABA).
At Aardvark, we go beyond just the program plan, connecting families with necessary resources, support and education. Family involvement and a supportive community are integral to a child’s success. We endeavour to ensure that each child receives the care and support that they deserve, while working in the home environment and/or kindergarten, which for young children is the most natural setting.
Family involvement and a supportive community are integral to a child’s success.
Autistic children do not experience the world the same way as neurotypical individuals. They process information differently. They take things literally and they find it very difficult to see and understand something from another person’s point of view. They want to have close and meaningful social engagements, but they do not necessarily know how to go about it.
The human brain is at its most flexible with the most neurons at a young age. This is why it is preferable to engage in therapy sessions as early as possible. The sooner we start, the better the outcomes.
Why us
Aardvark Autism Support & Services offer One-of-a-Kind Services to Enhance Your Child's Development.
- We assist the entire child holistically in a loving, play-based and supportive environment. We facilitate success through collaboration with families, kindergartens, schools, doctors, SLPs, OTs, and other disciplines to assure goals are streamlined for maximum progress.
- Our behaviour technicians receive intensive training and work directly with each child, one-on-one, under the direct supervision of a program supervisor (Board-Certified Behaviour Analyst).
- Program supervisors complete assessments on each child, develop treatment programs, provide client and program supervision, and make data-based decisions. Parent training is also highly recommended to families and is delivered by their program supervisor.
- We believe in listening to each family’s unique set of needs, and creating a plan that assists everyone in the family.
