Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Services in Victoria, Autism Spectrum Disorder is a complex developmental disorder with a neurological basis that affects how an individual interacts with the physical and social world. ASD is a lifelong condition for which no cure has yet been found, but research has shown that with early intensive intervention, the prognosis for individuals diagnosed with the disorder is greatly improved (Corsello, 2005.)

As the name implies, individuals with ASD have varying degrees of impairment, with each individual being unique in how their symptoms present.

There is still much that needs to be learned about Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but a considerable amount has already been uncovered, and research continues to reveal more. What is known is that with the appropriate intervention, your child can lead a more socially rewarding and productive life.

Some Possible Early Signs Of Autism

Does not respond to own name
Avoids eye contact
Does not gesture or point to things to draw others’ attention to it (joint attention)
Rarely copies the behaviours of others (pretending to talk on the phone, sweep the floor etc.)
Engages repetitive body movements (e.g. hand flapping, toe pointing) and/or repetitive speech patterns or engages in other self-stimulatory behaviours (e.g. repeatedly watches rice falling, o drops running down a window, or visually follows lines around the environment. They may continually spin the wheel on a car, or listen to the same 10 second clip of a video on repeat.)
Lack of empathy; plays alone -appears to show no interest in forming relationships
Restrictive interests (may only want to play with dinosaurs or trains, but does not do so in a functional/playful manner. )
Resistant to physical contact
Lacks awareness of danger in their surroundings.
Delay or lack of verbal communication with little to no babbling

At this time, there is no evidence that specific toxins in the environment, immunization practices, dietary differences, or immunologic differences cause autism. It is quite likely that some combination of genetic, neuropathologic, and environmental agents will explain the etiology of autism, and that the etiology may vary from one individual to another.”
